How to Set up an Ftp Server on XP
- 1First, you should start by retrieving your Windows XP CD.
- 2Next, click the Start button and go to the Control Panel.
- 3After that, select "Add/Remove Windows Components."
- 4Select "Internet Information Services" under "Windows Components."
- 5Click "details" and select the "File Transfer Protocol (FTP)" service. (Remember that this will also automatically select "Common Files" and "Internet Information Services Snap-In.")
- 6Click OK and follow the instructions for the install Wizard (or you can just push next if you don't feel like reading). Be prepared with your Windows XP CD, because it might prompt you for it if you haven't already installed it. Once it is done, you might have to restart your computer after this.
- 7After that, all you need to do is just paste the files you want to be public into "C:\INETPUB\FTPROOT." Note that by default, these files are read-only and public. Public meaning that anyone who knows the IP address may download copies from it.
- 8Now, you need to configure your router's firewall to let FTP traffic through. This can be done through your router's administration menu. Note that this will vary depending on your router.
- 9After letting your router firewall let FTP connections in, you will have to configure your regular firewall to let FTP connections in through a certain port.
- 10Finally, after done with everything, you may access your FTP site through your browser. All you need to do is type ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ in the URL where "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" is the WAN address of your computer.
How to Set up Port Forwarding on a Router
- 1The first step is to go to your router's "web page"
- Caution: You'll need your pc connected with a wire, this is called a LAN (Local Area Network) connection.
- 2Open up your web browser, and enter the standard IP (internet protocol) for your router.
- This is normally: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 (check your computer's Default Gateway start > Run > cmd > ipconfig /all)
-
- on Linksys routers its "admin" for both user and password.
- on Netgear Routers its "admin" for username and "password" for "password"
- 3
- 4Next, enter the desired ports.
- If your router asks you whether to open ports for TCP or UDP select both.
-
- 5Next, enter the IP address of the computer you would like the data from that port to be sent to.
- An IP address is a random number assigned to a computer by a router.
-
- Pay specific attention to the last three digits, most routers will only ask for these.
- 6Make sure you press the "Save Settings" button, or your changes will not take effect.
How to Set up DHCP on LAN
- 1Decide what range of IP addresses you would like to use
- 2Set the IP address of your computer to 192.168.0.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (an address in the same subnet as the addresses in the pool, but not an address in the pool itself!)
- 3Download dhcpd32 from http://tftpd32.jounin.net/
- 4Unzip the file to your computer and run dhcpd32.exe
- 5Set the "IP pool starting address" to the address you want the first computer to use DHCP to have. (192.168.0.100 if you're not sure!)
- 6Set the "Size of pool" to a little more than the number of computers and devices you think you'll need on your LAN. (if in doubt, 50 is a nice number)
- 7Leave the "Boot File" field blank
- 8If you have a DNS server on your network, or one accessible to the machines on your network, enter it's IP address in the "WINS/DNS Server" box. If you don't, or don't know what it means, leave it blank.
- 9Set "Mask" to your subnet mask. If you don't know what that is, follow my addressing scheme and set it to 255.255.255.0
- 10Leave the "Domain Name" and "Additional Option" boxes as they are.
- 11Press "Save".
- 12Your DHCP server is now set up!
